The Dark is Rising sequence
If you like mystical powers, knights, and awesome detail, try the first book in The Dark is Rising. By Susan Cooper. The Green Witch. Will, Bran, Barney, Jane, and some other charecters, find out they have special powers no other kid has. They go on journies to stop the Dark from rising up and taking over the world. Based in Wales, England, this was the best book in my library. ((After Artemis Fowl, of course.))

AH!
LOVE!
[/spam]
I read these when I was really little and they were the first books that got me.
They were the first books that I wished I was in, and the first books that I was obsessed with.
They are amazing!
My favourites are probably the Dark is Rising and The Silver on the Tree.
I didn't like Over Sea Under Stone quite as much, but it was still very good.
I'm actually trying to collect those books. They are old and IMPOSSIBLE to find.
I borrowed them from the library when I was little, so I don't own them.
From internet ordering and scrounging through library cast-offs I've managed to buy Over Sea Under Stone, The Grey King and The Dark is Rising.
Oh, and don't get me wrong when I say that I read them when I was little. These ARE NOT kids books.
Rereading them opened my eyes so much. They are very significant.

- Spoiler:
- The idea that The Black Rider and The White Rider were both "evil" is a fantastic concept. White is usually good and Black is generally evil, but Susan Cooper points out that anything to the extreme is not good.
The Black Rider is stuck in darkness and The White Rider is blinded by dogmatic ignorance.

Re: The Dark is Rising sequence
I'll have to add this to my book list, too. I've never heard of it, but I'll read it as soon as possible.

Re: The Dark is Rising sequence
I think that I have it memorized:
When the Dark comes rising six shall turn it back
Three from the cradle, three from the track
Wood, bronze, iron, water, fire, stone
Five will return and one go alone
Iron for the birthday, bronze carried long
Wood from the burning, stone out of song
Fire from the candle ring, water from the thaw
Six signs a circle and the grail gone before
Fire from the mountain shall find the harp of gold
Played to wake the Sleepers, oldest of the old
Power from the Greenwitch lost beneath the sea
And all shall find the light at last, the silver on the tree
Love so much.
What I don't get is the "Five will return and one go alone" line.
At first I thought that it was Merriman who went alone. He kept in contact with Will, but in general he kept separate from the Six.
Then I thought that it might have been Will. The others returned to their original lives and he was the only one left with the experience (except for Merry).
If somebody could clarify?

Its Fire from the candle light, trust me. I own the series.

Re: The Dark is Rising sequence
So do I.
I was just reciting it from memory.
Let me just check:
*Finds TSOTT*
"Fire from the Candle-ring"
I still want to know who goes alone.

- It was Bran. He was supposed to go with his father back to his time-period, but decided against it.

Re: The Dark is Rising sequence
I loved this series! My favorite book was Greenwitch, and my favorite character was Will. I haven't seen the movie yet, but I can't wait until my local library gets it so I can watch it. But I really loved the books.

I read it and also tried to recite that poem. Probably when I was nine.
