There Is Always Another Choice

The Unused and Untainted

________There is many a day when you don't beleive anyone lives in those woods outside your home. It's always quiet; even in the Spring and summer, when birds usually sing their hearts out and squirrels cry from the branches in the woods behind your friends' houses.
____No; your secluded little chunk of forest is different. It's always silent. not a stir - accept maybe the wind making the leaves howl.
____So, you go out and explore it one day by yourself. Hopping over fallen trees you eye the place. Seems pretty alive for a silent plot of trees. There's not much here. A small pond a bit bigger than the size of a trashcan lid in a small grove of clover and bushes. A great tall tree in the center with great gnarled roots easy to rest on.
____But you hit your foot on something in this desolate place walking alongside the pond. You bend and pick it up, grasping it with your fingers to feel it's smooth texture, it's odd shape. A moon stone. You think it's a pretty little thing, so you take it home and set it on your bedstand. You watch it glow in the evening and awake to it's smooth, pale face each dawn. Accept once.
____On the nights of the New Moons, the stone glows so brightly it wakes you up in the middle of the night. You reach out to pick it up and put in a drawer so you can drift back to sleep. But as soon as your fingers touch it, a shock of green lightning runs through your whole body - waking you up instantly. A group of around sixteen fireflies appears. Shocked, literally, and curious, you crawl out of bed to follow them out the back door and into the forest. They vanish as you approach the pond, and you stare down into the water.
____Before it had been a murky mud hole; now it was crystal clear. And you know what you see? Stairs. Take them. See where they lead you; and meet others who have broken the portal between worlds...

Name: Satoshi Hikari
Gender: Male
Age: 16
Stone: Moon Stone
Appearance: Satoshi
Personality: He is very graceful and quiet, but he has a whip-lash temper. Very intelligent.
Background: Satoshi grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. The city was his home until his parents moved into a more secluded town just outside the city. He realized his love for nature here, and since then has ceased to do anything but draw and think somewhere quiet. He was an only child for fourteen years before his baby brother was born. Now, he's a big brother, and has lived a peaceful life with his two equally quiet yet kind parents. He loves rainy weather and peace, and can be found sitting outside somewhere anytime he has a spare moment. Even in the rain. His favorite color is grass green.

Satoshi felt the wind rustle his hair and he craned his neck to look over his shoulder, a look of surprise plastering across his pale face. Strange. A chill went up his spine and he looked back at his lap, rubbing his arms. The breeze had been warm not long ago. Around him is a back lawn of lush green grass and bushes. The tree line is dense behind him, the trees towering and sinister in appearance. He ran his fingers through his beacon of silver hair, glasses flashing as he glanced back at his house. Well, mother didn't open the window and leave the airconditioner on like she usually does, so where could that strange chill have come from? He pondered this with a frown. Maybe it was an omen to him to stop gazing into the sky, and to move away from this immense pensive phase in his life and more towards something to further his future. Shaking his head, he chuckled at himself, recrossing his legs on the tree stump he was perched on. No. That was silly. His life was fine as it was... wasn't it?

He slid his hand into his pocket, fingering the pale, milky white stone that he'd found just this morning in the forest. Something had told him to pick it up - but to never put it down again. He found this odd, but it was such a lovely thing, lying there alone in a patch of grass, that he'd had to pick it up and examine it. And with examining it came intruiging intrest. And with intrest came possesion. Now, he couldn't leave it alone. It was like a compulsion. Every ten minutes he would touch it's soft, smooth surface; make sure it was still where he'd placed it, against his thigh. Sighing quietly, he leaned his elbows on his knees with the stone in his hands and peered at it. This little thing sure knew how to drag a body in.
"Toooshi!" Kenichi called from the porch to his older brother across the lawn, tottering to the column for something to cling to. "Are you hungry yet?" Satoshi looked up at his little two year old brother's pouting face. The small boy had been wanting to make him lunch since noon. It was two in the afternoon now; Satoshi had spent over six hours sitting here today.
"As a matter of fact, I'm craving one of your signature sandwiches right now!" At the elated look on Kenichi's face, Satoshi had to grin. "Do you want me to come in and help you?" He asked teasingly, a kind smile on his face.
"Nooo, nonono!" The boy squealed, happy to be given something to do. "I do by myself! I'll get Toshi when it finished!" He piped, scuttlnig back inside as fast as he could so Satoshi couldn't out-run him. Satoshi threw his head back and laughed. So cute. He loved his little brother; but they were so far apart in age... He took in a deep breath with his head back and gazed up at the clouds, sighing it out again. Tonight was a New Moon. Maybe he'd have an interesting dream; he usually did, on Full and New Moons. His fingers went to the stone as he continued to gaze, curling around the stone instinctively. What sort of dream, though, he wondered...?
