One tip to stop writers block

Post by harrygz on Sat Mar 08, 2008 4:41 am

I got this tip from my favorite fanfiction author of all time. It's really simple (not for me.) You just have to be really hungry when you are ready to type a story so you dont get to relaxed. Hope this helps.

Very good, my friend. I use that same trick myself.

Hmm, I've never had writers block. I always know what I want to say. But maybe I will try this sometime. It will seem a little reversed for me I suppose since I usually eat and write at the same time.

I have found the cure for writters block!!!

When your writting, open the internet. Then get it on your favorite game. If you get stuck then go to the game and play it for a while. Once you have played the game for about 10 minutes, go back to writing. It worked for me and I hope it works for someone else *smiles*

I also found out that reading a really bad book helps. You get so annoyed by it and always have in mind "I could do that better" that you automatically run in the right direction.
I watched a bad movie and that also worked for a script of mine. I had the best idea ever how to end it.
So far: For stories and books -> read a bad book
For scripts -> watch a bad movie.

But normally I don't have a writer's block, it's more a laziness.

If you don't write the book in chronological order and write whatever chapter you feel pasionate about at that time. It worked well for me!

Find an idea or a topic you're really passionate about.
Then see if you can expand on it, make it your own.
Your ideas should come freely.~
And don't go "Oh, that's a horrible idea! It'll never work!" Because that could be the one idea you end up using.

Or start a short story to work on while you think about what to happen in the one currently stuck on..
Sometimes I'll have a friend read it and ask if they have ideas i can expand

Or, going to the short story idea, write a random scene from the story.
You can insert it in later on, if you really like it.

Re: One tip to stop writers block

Post by Hazel on Mon Jul 06, 2009 9:02 am

I found these randomly while on the internet, I dunno if they'll be any help, but eh maybe Razz

Talk to a monkey - Explain what youíre really trying to say to a stuffed animal or cardboard cutout.
Do something important thatís very easy - Is there a small part of your project you could finish quickly that would move things forward?
Try freewriting - Sit down and write anything for an arbitrary period of timeósay, 10 minutes to start. Donít stop, no matter what. Cover the monitor with a manila folder if you have to. Keep writing, even if you know what youíre typing is gibberish, full of misspellings, and grammatically psychopathic. Get your hand moving and your brain will think itís writing. Which it is. See?
Take a walk - Get out of your writing brain for 10 minutes. Think about bunnies. Breathe.
Take a shower; change clothes - Give yourself a truly clean start.
Write from a persona - Lend your voice to a writing personality who isnít you. Doesnít have to be a pirate or anythingójust try seeing your topic from someone elseís perspective, style, and interest.
Get away from the computer; Write someplace new - If youíve been staring at the screen and nothing is happening, walk away. Shut down the computer. Take one pen and one notebook, and go somewhere new.
Quit beating yourself up - You canít create when you feel whipped. Stop visualizing catastrophes, and focus on positive outcomes.
Stretch - Maybe try vacuuming your lungs too.
Add one ritual behavior - Get a glass of water exactly every 20 minutes. Do pushups. Eat a Tootsie Roll every paragraph. Add physical structure.
Listen to new music - Try something instrumental and rhythmic that youíve never heard before. Put it on repeat, then stop fiddling with iTunes until your draft is done.
Write crap - Accept that your first draft will suck, and just go with it. Finish something.
Unplug the router - Metafilter and Boing Boing arenít helping you right now. Turn off the Interweb and close every application you donít need. Consider creating a new user account on your computer with none of your familiar apps or configurations.
Write the middle - Stop whining over a perfect lead, and write the next part or the part after that. Write your favorite part. Write the cover letter or email youíll send when itís done.
Do one chore - Sweep the floor or take out the recycling. Try something lightly physical to remind you that you know how to do things.
Make a pointless rule - You canít end sentences with words that begin with a vowel. Or you canít have more than one word over eight letters in any paragraph. Limits create focus and change your perspective.
Work on the title - Quickly make up five distinctly different titles. Meditate on them. What bugs you about the one you like least?
Write five words - Literally. Put five completley random words on a piece of paper. Write five more words. Try a sentence. Could be about anything. A block ends when you start making words on a page.

Try a writing exercise.
Just go on google and find one that you like.
And then set your timer... and go.
Stop when the timer goes off. It doesn't matter is you like it or not, just stop.
Read over it. Is it good? Do you like it? Could it be improved?
Leave it for a day or two, maybe a week or month.
Come back to it. Do you still like it? If you do, find ways to improve it. If you don't, improve it still.
Leave that draft again for the same period of time.
Keep coming back until you have nice little short story.

(This really helps you improve as a writer. It lets you see that you make mistakes and that you can fix them with a little patience. I have one in the trash been -- the sword fight -- that shows how I've improved.)

I've tried doing that, but sometimes I get caught up in the game and the mood to write just goes away. Usually I watch a tv show or read part of a book that inspires me before I can start writing anything I'm really into.

Some advice, I think came from Ernest Hemingway...or some author like him who's famous that I can't remember lol, said that the best way to avoid writers block is to always stop right when you're at the best part of the story and nothing is going wrong, that way you'll always be anxious and excited to begin writing again.

That advice does not work for me, I would die in anticipation, when I have amazing idea it has to go onto paper immediately or I may explode, but I suppose it might work for others Razz
